Some years ago I started to show work with a gallery in Llanelli. On my way home from the mid summer opening preview I  took the scenic route along the beautiful Towy estuary, stopping for a fish & chip supper to watch the sun set in Burry Port.  This place really is the hidden gem of Carmarthenshire. Long golden sandy beaches, a working harbour and marina, rows of huddled together picturesque cottages. It just had to be painted!

So the initial sketches were made …. and put away. Other paintings took priority, other shows demanded my attention. Burry Port waited and waited. Every few months I’d get a social media reminder from a lady who’d seen the initial sketch – asking, politely, was Burry Port finished yet …. and I kept looking at the un-finished canvas and saying ‘nearly’.

It wasn’t until I had a two week ‘pop up’ show and demonstration painting event in Cardigan that the poor old canvas was dragged out and put on the easel. Even then I was struggling with the composition. Something just wasn’t right.  And then an artistic angel appeared. Move the light house she said. I did, and there we have it – five years in the making, but well worth the wait  – I hope you’ll agree.

When I look back on the story of this painting I am reminded of and am grateful for  all the people in involved in it’s making. The gallery owners in Llanelli and the strawberries & cream midsummer opening, the people of Burry port for loving their town and keeping it beautiful, LM for her helpful reminders and the anonymous visitor to the Corn Exchange Gallery in Cardigan for her helpful advice. Indeed no one ever makes art alone.
